Candle Burning TipsCANDLE BURNING TIPS Following proper burning techniques are not only essential for safety reasons but will also effect the way your candle burns. If you follow these few basic tips, you will find that your candle will burn longer, cleaner, and hold its fragrance all the way to the bottom of the candle. You've paid good money for your candle and you want to get the best results possible but above all....you want to be safe! **Keep your wicks trimmed! This is essential for a clean, smoke free burn. Before you light your candle, trim the wick to 1/4". This is true for any type of candle. **Container candles need to be allowed to burn until your melt pool has reached the edges. Normally, this will be about one hour for every inch of the container's diameter. This will prevent any residue wax left on the sides of the container. **Keep debris out of the melt pool. When you trim your wick make sure the "burnt" part doesn't fall back into your candle. This is not only a safety hazard but might also cause your candle to smoke. **Keep wick centered. If it's a container candle, do not let the flame touch the sides of the jar or burn all the way to the bottom. This might cause your glass to break or crack. It's always wise to extinguish the flame about 1/4" from the bottom. **Pillar candles are designed to leave a little rim of wax on the edge to prevent dripping. (If your candle drips, you've burned it for too many hours) If you like to keep a flat top on your pillars, hug the candle after each burn by taking your hands and gently pushing the sides in toward the middle. This will not work on most cake or chunk candles because of the icing and embeds. **If your pillar burns unevenly due to a draft, carefully push the wick to the higher side. You might need to do this a couple of times and move the candle to another area. Try to keep your wick centered. **Never "blow out" a candle. Blowing will spray the wax everywhere and cause the candle to drip and smoke. The most effective way to extinguish the flame of a candle is to use a candle snuffer. If you don't have one, the next best way is to take the wick and using tweezers or scissors, dip it into the melted wax and then reposition it. **The first time you light a pillar candle, burn it one hour for every inch of its diameter...just like a jar candle. This will allow the pool of wax to extend to the outside rim and prevent your candle from forming a "canyon" in its center. Burning your candle this way will also set its memory. Each time you re-light the candle it will "remember" to burn out to the rim. **ALWAYS read the caution labels on a candle and NEVER leave a burning candle unattended. |
